US Woman – Tough Day at FED CUP

By Stacey Anderson, Programming Director

It was a tough day for the US woman at the Fed Cup finals without Serena and Venus (both out with injuries).   Coco Vendeweighe and Bethany Mattek Sands were no match for the more experienced Italian players Francesca Schiavone and Flavia Pennetta.

Coco started off the day looking nervous and quickly fell behind in the first set losing 6-2.  She showed her tenacity by coming to net and trying hard to stay aggressive.  But the experience of Schiavone was evident as she stopped Coco’s momentum in its tracks winning the second set 6-4.

The second match started similar to the first with Bethany Mattek Sands unable to find her rhythm on her serve.  There were signs of hope as Bethany came back to lead the first set 6-5 but after an hour and 20 minutes, Bethany lost the first set in a tie break to a weary Pennetta.  There was good reason to hope that Bethany could take the match to a third set but half way through the second set Bethany began to cramp and was unable to overcome her pain.  Flavia was able to close out the match – 7-6, 6-4.

Second day of matches is on Sunday, November 7.  Stay tuned…
